| Hello Jack.. By 'tedious' I guess you mean 'time consuming'.. Dependent on the level of sophistication and realism required for the harmonies to be generated from the lead track there are many ways you could go. I won't go into too much detail but here are a few methods I employ; For simple harmonies, I copy the parts of the vocal track needing a harmony onto new track/s. Bounce in place and then transpose either in the inspector panel or via the right click menu I can also shift the track/s by a few milliseconds for a richer chorus effect. For more control over more complex harmonies I use Izotope Nectar 2 whereby I can write a harmony midi track (or use an existing instrument midi track) and use this to generate the harmonies in the Nectar plugin 'Harmony' module. There are also many plugins which have a harmony setting but results will often be unusable as the harmonies have fixed intervals and will only suit certain song structures - Nectar elements for example. I recently bought Waves 'Soundshifter' plugin on promo and although I haven't had much of a chance to play with it, my initial findings are that it generates excellent sounding harmonies devoid of many of the artifacts found in other transposing fx. With all of these harmony/transpose fx I'm careful to use in moderation and with small-ish intervals because the formant change can sound too synthetic but blended into the background of a mix it's surprising what I can get away with. | Hello Jack - not at my computer at the moment as I'm overseas visiting family and getting my son back to university but I'll give it a shot from memory! Analyse your lead vocal track and decide which parts you want to harmonise. Split the track to individualise the parts for the harmony and 'Alt drag' to copy the events for harmonising onto new track/s (or copy the complete vocal track onto new tracks x number of harmonies you want and then delete unwanted sections). Label your new track/s harmony one, two, three etc. and open up the 'Inspector' pane. In the 'Inspector' pane you'll see towards the bottom a 'Transpose' box where you can adjust the track transposition in +/- semitone increments to create the harmony. Repeat for other harmony tracks using a different interval as required. Additional enhancement can be obtained by offsetting the timing by a few microseconds say 10-20ms, differing for each harmony track. This can also be done in the inspector or by sending the harmony tracks to an fx bus and adding chorus for instance or other time/modulation/ panning/reverb fx. Hope this helps.. Regards.. | Off topic but semi-related: Steve's method also works well for minor vocal tuning if you'd rather not always load Melodyne when only a few notes are off pitch and Melodyne is overkill. Split, tune the word or phrase +/- 50 cents or whatever. (Same track obviously in that case) Batman should do a video on that. I'll ask him. |
| Eventide's Quadravox is on sale for $49 if you want inexpensive and fast. I don't think it'll sound as good as Melodyne, but Eventide does fantastic pitch shifting. |

PreSonus® is now shipping Studio One® 4.5, a major update to its powerful yet easy-to-use recording and production software. With more than 70 new features and improvements, this free update for Studio One 4 users adds several of the most requested features from the Studio One user community and adds advanced tools that streamline professional audio and MIDI production workflows.

The redesigned Input Channel section adds updated hardware preamp controls for selected PreSonus audio interfaces, as well as software-based input gain and phase controls to every input. This combination of hardware- and software-based gain controls offers more flexibility and control throughout the entire recording and mixing process. All audio and instrument channels, effects channels, and buses also feature gain and phase controls so you can manage perfect levels across the entire mix without increasing event gain.
Grouping has been completely redesigned: Groups now have attributes for defining edit groups or mix groups using attributes for Volume, Pan, Mute/Solo, Inserts, and Sends. Groups can be nested and can be easily edited and activated/suspended with one click. A dedicated command can globally enable/disable all Groups at once.
Setting up an external audio interface is a lot easier thanks to several I/O setup improvements. Add any number of new inputs and outputs in just one step, including custom naming and coloring. Inputs and outputs can be reordered with simple drag-and-drop. Users who switch interfaces, move between studios, or collaborate will appreciate the new Import and Export options for I/O setups.
A new Plug-In Manager lists all installed third-party plug-ins, including a list of plug-ins that were blacklisted during the initial scan, allowing them to be reset individually or globally. Showing or hiding individual or groups of plug-ins only takes a few clicks.

Note actions can be used manually and individually, and they can be assigned to keyboard shortcuts and used as part of a Macro command. Shortcuts or Macros can then be added to any Macro Toolbar, enabling even more powerful customization.
The new update adds many other important features and enhancements. For instance, the Chord Selector now offers a convenient Audition mode. Individual Audio Events, Audio Parts, and Instrument Parts in an arrangement can now be locked to prevent unintentional moving or editing, and you can even lock entire tracks. You can now export video with the audio mixdown as the soundtrack. AAC (m4a) and ALAC (Apple Lossless) format compatibility for audio import and export at different bit depths and sample rates have been added.
